Mighty Extensions goes to GPL PDF Send Print
Thursday, 23 June 2011
Social Bookmarks

At 1st July 2011 all Commercial Encoded components will be provided with Open Source. It means that you’ll don’t need ionCube and license file any more. But all Commercial components will stay as Commercial and could not been downloaded from MightyExtenstion web-site without payment.
It means that if customer wants to overview and gets to know components it will be available at Demo site only.

Also Support will be provided to those only who has purchased especial Support Subscription. Through after purchasing a component this paid support will be provided for 14 days automatically.

So, everything described above means that we’ll change Subscription plans policy. Here will be next types of Subscriptions:

  1. Purchase component + 14 days support
  2. Purchase support per component for 1 week or 1 month
  3. Personal online support by Skype and other chatline systems dedicated to customer directly.

Support will be sold separately for each Component (irrespective of version) with period 1 week and 1 month. For web-masters we’ll offer later Ultimate support plan for all components and 6 or 12 months.

All customers who have purchased Encoded Commercial component before going to GPL will be granted with 3 month (till 30 September 2011) official support service for components which were purchased by them.

Since we’ve moved our Support Desk/Feature Request/Testimonials sections to AngelDesk service the VIP status is kept for priority support as it’s been before. The new Support Desk will transform to Public Community. We guarantee that each VIP customer’s topic will have official answer from Mighty Extensions team. Other non -VIP or no name (public users) postings will not be ignored by us at all. But these users should understand that we will pay attention to their topic if timeframe allows it.

Hello,

1. UNLIMITED UPDATE. We can update components. That means that any component will be fully debugged in each version and we will access to last update fully debugged, isn't it?

2. UPGRADE. Are you planning important upgrades within next year? How % will cost to upgrade a component?

3. Later Ultimate support plan for all components and 6 or 12 months. How much will cost this subscription?

4. Could you explain to us why Mighty Extensions become Open Source?

Hope all this changes contribute to make the Mighty Extensions project stronger.

Thanks

I bought a complete package license yesterday and have a lot of problems with the assistant software (XML errors and stuf). Reading a messasge like this the day after is not amusing at all.

Paying for support is tricky what if a bug is dicovered during payed troubleshooting! Do I still have to pay, it is not my bug...

Loosing the trail possibility is NOT a good thing! The components are way to complex to test on de demo srever! There is no way that you can test functionaity and integration of components in a good way on a demo server.

License files in combination with the assistant are a great solution!

What will this mean for the Assistant software? One of the major reasons I bougt the software package for my customer.

I would rather see a Joomla 1.6 version of a all components, because now I'm forced to develop a Joomla 1.5 webiste that will be outdated when it is ready, but I cannot wait anymore.

Hoping that you guys will reconcider some things before making all the changes!

Trial & local licenses:

The Trial license was indeed a good idea – testing the live-server can be important. The possibility to show something to a decision maker is a nice option. No need to do advanced payment.

Most important: The localhost license files!!! That is indispensible!

  1. Yes, after releasing a version that component will be debugged and all pdate will be free for paid members.
  2. New features will be published at new version of component. It will happen as soon as new significant features will have been implemented. I can't say about % discount right now, but we'll make price policy that it will be useful for customers.
  3. Can't say right now too. If demand is appearing we'll publish prices soon.
  4. We produce extensions for Joomla, it's open source project.

to GreenFree

We understand that you worry about spended money. But if you'll purchase it later when all components we'll have been GPL, price could be higher and you'll be allowed for 14 days support only. Not, as you've purchase package before becoming to GPL you'll get support for 90 days.

If we provide trial version with open source it means that we present our product for everyone and we could get profit.

GreenFree

I deeply understand your concerns. If you find bug no matter during your VIP status or not we will fix it FREE as soon as possible. Bug fixing is absolutely free and we try to provide best support quality and speed. I know right now it is not perfect but that is one of the reason we moved to AngelDesk to make our support more officiant as for us as for our customers.

We also hate to lose trial licenses possibility. That was great. But you know Joomla do not allow encoded extensions. And after we open it we cannot control licenses. It is actually good for you. because you buy it once and then use on all sites. Because it cannot be restricted by domain any more.

The fact that that you purchased it right now is very good. because component download will not be free even we go GPL. In fact as you noticed in the news it mention that price will go little bit higher. So actually you got our staff cheaper and at the end (in 1-2 month) when we complete go to GPL you get non restricted components for old price. My congratulation that you made your purchase right on time.

Assistant is a great staff. We will not refuse it. It will be yet developed to provide more and better services to install, update Mighty Extensions. The only difference there will be no need to instal licenses. But that only make things easier isn't it?

At Shitz:

Sorry for beeing at the negative side of this, but there are no prices yet so it could also be cheaper... Making the products more expensive makes them less compatataive with other products and alternatives.

The source will be open, so trial license or not the code will be out there anyway! So that is not a real argumnet for not working with trail licenses on open source software. There are good alttarnatives that are also used by other Joomla developers that don't use ionCube.

I started working with the software yesterday (after working with with resources for more then a year) and the Assistant is not working because the XML gets corrupted (missing <>). When I check the forums I can see a lot of other people with the sam issue, but no solutions yet... Keep in mind that people excpect more when they are paying for stuff! My customer has chosen your solution based on the Assistant software so I really need to get this working...

How about Joomla 1.6 and the mighty componenets? I think this is way more important!

At last, Joomla was open source al allong, so why go for open source now?

Remco

There is no download for J1.5 extensions in the future? I mean versions, that run specifically on localhost only?

I understand your GPL route for components... but why not free GPL main components and other stuff like modules/integrations/templates & Support for subscription? There might be a single subscription for each product line or even a super-subscription for all...

e.g. Joomlapolis (CommunityBuilder) uses a similar concept and seems to be very succesful.

I think maikkaune has a point.

Subscriptions is a good way. Buy for a year, download what you need, If you want to update the year after, buy a new subscription. Fabrikar (fabrik) and JCE are working like this and I'm still gladly to pay them every year! No per domain administration and stuff, really easy for resellers and developers.

Remco

@GreenFree

Thanks for your agreement. I really do like this kind of subscriptions! Its easy to re-new and understand. The possibilities for both sides are very open...

The subscription part can be extended easily. I remember CB has this additional support areas... VIP members have there special support forum threads. Downloads are restricted respectively. Access is 1 Year.

The easier and transparent the concept, the more people are subscribing ;-) A Freemium-concept is always the best in my humble opinion.

What? You do not like to get lifetime access? You want to pay every year? Laughing

I understand you. Actually we wil have almost the same scheme but different. We will release 1 new version a year. Say we released Resources 2.0. Then you get free updates for any 2.x version no matter 1 or 2 years. When we release new version 3 you can purchase it again but with discount up to 50% (not sure right now). And you get free updates without time restriction for any 3.x versions. This is almost the same. But it is not yearly subscription. We may release new version in 9 month or 3 new version in 2 years. So actually it is more honest. You do not pay for year and do not know how much this year will bring to you. You pay for job done. It means that in cases you described you prepay future features 1 year in front. In our case you will pay for features right in your hand.

@GreenFree

What are the good licensing alternative other are using?

@maikkaune
I do not like too the fact that i have to take money before user download our solutions. It was very nice and I felt my customers in secure when they could download and try staff before purchase. But unfortunately I afraid that if we do not find Joomla legal way to restrict extensions to domains, we are not able to allow downloading for free.

@Serhio

Its not funny, nor rediculous ;-) Its easy and a very common and well-known concept. I believe, it would definitely attract more customers... but i might be wrong.

As you mentioned, its almost the same. You just use other terms ;-) At the end there is no real difference for the customer, when it comes to the question: How much Money is spend per product.

But anyway, we have to trust you, what exactly is a new full-release number... and what is a new feature. Lifetime? Is a relative term in your example.

Regarding Life-Time:

Among all this re-structuring process... what is the lifetime and update strategy for Resources 1.5 (or any other J!1.5 product) Do you still have human Resources for the maintenance and development?

SerhioAvatar

Right now we are very close to updating Resources for Joomla 1.6 as it is. May be few more features as everything changed anyway and we will get mostly new sites, it is easier to apply big changes.

When we release new version (not subversion) we of course announce the list of new features included. So you know what is in there before you actually purchase to update to new version. Does this answer your question? Because I afraid I did not understood exactly what you asked.

@Serhio

1. In my last comment, I was talking about the J!1.5 version itself. Not upgrading to 1.6.

2. You said "Very close to updating..." Do you mean BEGINNING or FINISHING ? ;-)

3. CB subscription example: They also sell the documentation access and PDF download!

Well, i don't know if this New Concept will be good for me or not, as in my case I'm  in a process of developing  my Business Directory, and had lot I mean "LOTs"  of trial and discussion with ME supporting team in order to get the project done (thanks to Konstantin and his team for their very good support).

I have a big Business Directory category that trying to put into ME Resources, and the latest discussion is a suggestion to reduce the category size, and it was not an easy solution (I'm doing it since 2 months ago, and still struglling to sort it out yet).

As in my case, it is very important to test it on a live server to get to know its performance (concerning to large database size), and this New Concept remove the possibility to test it on live server.

I don't mind with membership and yearly paid, but I think a paid support should be applied after the projects goes life and not limmited by days right after first time purchase. Another way, you can provide support included in a package and support with paid.

The possibility to test it on live server is very important for me, I also understand that with GPL concept it will be difficult for you to control it. Perhaps, if you could provide two versions of ME with one still using current concept (trial license) for live test purposes, I believe it will not against Joomla open Source policy, since it will be use only for test purposes (you can hardcode "JUST FOR TEST" or something like that in your ME Resources to notify that it is for test only).

I hope you can give best solution for that.

I've read all of the discussions above. I believe Serhio and friends (ME staff & developers) thinking what's best for their customers. Their decision to make all of components to GPL and the changes in pricing policy will shake all of customers. Nothing static in this world and these changes give me some hope that ME staff and developers still got vision and antusiasm about their product. I always hoping that their great work will give a great impact in Joomla community.

I absolutelly support this new move by ME team, and trust that this new pricing policy will work just fine.  Actually i've been stressing up this topic for more than a year and now it's coming to realiuty, good job guys.

Going GPL will bring more customers, which is a great thing - faster bug discovering and overall new other extensions colaboration.

Just make sure your products are fast and worth paying for.

Thank you

When we won't need anymore to have installed licenses??

shitzAvatar

you don't need licenses anymore. Of cause if you continue to use previous version which was encoded the license is needed. If you update component with latest version which is GPL, licenses will be useless.

A few questions.

I run the ion-cube Membership and Registration as a great combination for registration and subscriptions. I want to install this GPL version, but i have some concern.

1. How should i approach this upgrade. Can i install normally and it will update the files, just like any update   ??

2. My current subscribers:  Will this effect their time period or anything that would cause the system not to work (time period messes up, interaction with paypal plugin where communication from paypal is sent back to component to create subscriber) , etc etc?  Is there a new plugin for paypal that i need?  ??

3.  Do you have a list of the files changed?  If there are only a few files, i rather insert them manually, that way if something screws up, i can fix quickly.     ??

4. I have everything working perfect. If i install the GPL component, what is likely to go wrong ??

5. I do not have the most current version of membership, but the second to most current version.  Can i install the new GPL version and everything ok? (database needs? problems? etc)

Thank you for your answers!  I run a site that is my work and I am nervous about transitioning to the GPL component.

Thanks,

Steve

Hello, Steve.

  1. Yes, it's usual update. Just new files are open source. No logic changes there.
  2. I don't think so. Nothing will be affected at DataBase. It's just files update. I suggest to make backup for /components/com_jcs/ and /administrator/components/com_jcs/ folders before update. If you have customized files, certainly they will be replaced. Sorry, I don't know about PayPal plugin which you need.
  3. It's better to make backup copy of folders above. There all files changed and contain open source.
  4. Nothing, single difference ionCube will not be used any more.
  5. Yes, think that it's usual update. You may update older version with latest GPL version and there are no problems.

You are welcome

Hi,

thank you for the responses. Gives me the confidence i need to go forward. Last thing i want is to bust my site. Yes, i will back up folders.

One follow up question. I use the paypal payment plugin provided by you guys for membership. Version 3.8.6.  Will this continue to be ok to work with the GPL component now? (i am guessing so as I you state files are same just open source now. But wanted to make sure)

THANKS!

I am very glad you decided to take this direction. This allows other extension developers to build plugins (like payment) and others making everything superb and provides dollars in the way of support contracts, and such. This was very smart move. glad you finally made the jump!
