(1) The interesting thing is the choice between database-stored coordinates (referred to the couple Zip code/country) and a coordinate field.

(2) Resource could have such a coordinate field plugin, rather similar to a double text filed plugin, but with automatic detection of coordinates numbering (sexagesimal -like in geographic data and maps- and decimal -like in GPS), with automatic conversion to decimal coordinates. To be fused into setlocation field? 

(3) a world database is a waste of resource. I doubt any European, for example, would bother to know if some village in the depths of Sumatra jungles is closer or not than another village.
It would be much better to load only those database that are for the user's country, inclusive-or that are closer than {back-end parametrizable value} km from his country.
For example, a French user would have at least database for Fr, Be, Sw, Lx, De, It, Sp, UK. Other countries like Pt, Nl, etc depending on the proximity setting.

(4) The distance calculation in ME registration and in Resource has a huge bug: it doesn't take into account the country! So, similar ZIP code give close distances !
My town in southern France is, according to ME, very close from a town in Ohio, USA, and to some city in northern Brazil. Interesting for vacations, no? If it's also close to Bishkek, I'll visit you, youpee!
